BREATH OF LIFE
(A Creation Story)
Genesis 2
Refrain
Breath of Life, Breathe in me
You have created all I see
Breath of Life, Breathe in me
You have created even me
1.
Long before God created birds and trees, rivers and seas, God made a human. From the dust and the soil of the earth, God formed the human's body. When the dust and the soil were formed just right God took a deep breath and blew the Breath of Life into the simple earth. The dirt and soil danced and swirled and sparked with God's breath until it became a living, breathing person.
2.
God knew this human would need a good home. And so God planted a garden for this human, making rocks and trees, rivers and seas, and grass that blew in the wind of God's breath. The human tended all these plants, tilling the soil and picking fruit from the trees. And all was well in the garden called Eden.
3.
God saw that this Human was alone. "I will make companions for the human," said God. And again God formed out of the earth all the wild beasts of the land and all the birds of the sky. And God breathed the breath of life into the simple earth. The dirt and soil danced and swirled and sparked with God's breath until the bodies erupted from the earth and were living, breathing beings.
4.
Now after awhile, God saw that the Human greatly enjoyed caring for the animals and playing with them. But the Human was still lonely. "What is needed," God thought, "is another Human being to be a friend and companion, to work and play together with the Human." And so God cast a deep sleep over the Human and removed a rib from the Human's side. God took that rib and breathed over it to make another human being that was a partner and friend for the first Human. Together they were man and woman, the first humans. They lived together in the garden called Eden, where they tended the soil and looked after the beasts and the birds. And they lived filled with God's breath.
5.
Now, this story is very old. But God's breath still fills the earth today! The birds and trees, the rivers and seas all carry God's breath within them. Why, God's breath fills even you! You see, God created all things. And all things carry God's breath. Every breath we take can be a reminder to us that God created the very first life. And God created all of life. And God created you. Never, ever forget.
