A short contemplative service with liturgy and songs

IN A NUTSHELL

Children of the Earth is a short, quiet order of worship with readings, liturgy, songs, prayer and imposition of ashes. Congregational music includes five chants based on psalms 51, 90, 61 and 62. In a poignant blend of gratitude and humility, we come to witness for one another:

We are children of the earth; to the earth we are returning.

We are numbering our days, opening our hearts to wisdom.

God, from age to age you have been a sanctuary.

(From the song "Children of the Earth")

THE EXPERIENCE

The psalms have a unique place in our worship tradition.

On Ash Wednesday, we pray with the psalmists our wonder at human life and mortality, our longing for renewal, our love for creation and our gratitude for community.

With ashes on our foreheads, we share together the timeless mystery of birth and death. And we engage the rich season of Lent grateful to share the life of Christ.
